About
Lea Detlefs has had an interesting and non-linear musical career. Encouraged by her grandfather to begin playing violin at 7, she added viola just a few years after, continuing to play both instruments as she went on to study Violin Performance at the Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Michigan School of Music. She has been a member of the Dearborn Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Toledo Symphony, the Plymouth Symphony, the Round Rock Symphony, and the Austin Symphony. After years of focusing on classical music, she used her time in the Live Music Capital (aka Austin, TX) to expand the scope of her musical experience.

She learned Appalachian fiddle, attended the Kerrville Folk Festival and it’s weeks of all night long jam sessions, sang and played violin in the folk trio Jimony, plugged in to play rock in local clubs with the band fortune my foe, (whose hard to categorize style members jokingly called “mathlotic post-prog rock neo-morose core”), and played at ACL Live in the back-up band for Father John Misty.
Over time she began to spend more time pursuing songwriting and composition. She joined the Austin Songwriters Group and attended the very first Texas Songwriter’s Symposium. She took advantage of the Austin Community College’s excellent Music, Business, and Technology program to study songwriting, composition, audio engineering and production, and MIDI (the use of digital instruments), and is using her recent training to produce an album of orchestral style accompaniment parts for students.
Lea Detlefs is a board member of the non-profit organization Education For Happiness, which promotes person-centered, developmentally informed musical education and offers regular online chamber music classes. In her free time she enjoys writing, hiking, and studying native plants and wildlife.

I think a few of the most important lessons I can give to my students, is to help you understand how to practice so you can make good progress and reach your goals, aid in the discovery of your preferred learning style, and give guidance on the development of tone and musicality, which take quite some time to develop but allow for greater enjoyment and self-expression. As a composer myself, I love encouraging the spark of creativity in students by giving them the space to improvise or write their own music. There are a growing number of string players branching out into rock, jazz, and electronic music as well, and I think it's important for students to hear all the possibilities available to them as string players from the start of their studies. My students play classical

music ranging from Bach to Paganini; are members of their high schools' intermediate and advanced orchestras; learn songs both by ear and musical notation; have written their own arrangements; have learned fiddle and folk music from the Americas, India and Eastern Europe; and have played a variety of popular music including Enya, the music of Zelda, Star Wars, and Game of Thrones.
Reviews
"Lea is a fantastic violin/viola teacher for students of all ages. I have seen her be very patient with all of her students. She has a broad range of education and experience to draw from when teaching. She is able to meet the student's needs in an individual manner to facilitate learning. No matter the age and experience, Lea is a talented teacher for all levels of students wanting to study strings, music theory, and/or composition. I highly recommend her!!!"

"Miss Lea Detlefs was my son's first violin instructor and because of clear instruction and enthusiasm he has learned quickly. Within just one year he can read music with confidence and practices daily without prompting. He looks forward to her lessons every week. She is a great teacher!"
"Lea's emphasis on positioning and tone have been the backbone of my daughter's lessons with her. We can all tell what a big difference proper positioning makes in her sound. Lea is flexible in her teaching methods, and adjusts her teaching style to fit the student. She is willing to experiment with different ideas to keep things interesting! Her students feel motivated by her encouragement and her interest in them. I would highly recommend Lea as a teacher."
"Lea was a perfect match for our daughter Rena. Lea was successful in teaching Rena how to enjoy the violin. Her way of teaching was systematic and to the point. Rena learned violin theory, how to hold the bow, keep the best posture, how to keep rhythm, and how to express dynamics. Lea always wrote down a list of learning points, homework for Rena, which Rena voluntarily practiced every day. She really enjoyed it. I don't know how young Lea learned to teach like an experienced teacher. I myself used to learn violin as a child, and wonder if I could have been a better player if I had met Lea."
