Lea Detlefs was given a violin at the age of seven by her grandfather, and between him and a neighbor who happened to be a retired violist from the Detroit Symphony, her musical education began. She has been playing violin for nearly 20 years now, and viola for 15. Lea studied Violin Performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with Gregory Fulkerson for one year, and later returned home to study violin at the University of Michigan School of Music under Yehonatan Berick and Gabriel Bolkosky. After graduating in 2010 she became a member of the Dearborn Symphony, and was a frequent substitute for the Toledo and Plymouth Symphonies. She has attended numerous summer music festivals, including Meadowmount School of Music in New York, Domaine Forget in Quebec, and the Phoenix Phest! in Ann Arbor, MI. She has also attended Mark O'Connor's fiddle camp in Tennessee, where she was inspired to take up Appalachian fiddling. Lea is a member of the funky-folk trio "Jimony" and the prog-rock band "Fortune My Foe". Lea taught for 8 years in Ann Arbor and 4 years in Austin, teaching classical violin, viola, and fiddle to students from ages five to adult. She is a teacher at Sargent Strings Fiddle Camp, and attended Austin's very first Texas Songwriter's Symposium. She has completed the following Suzuki teacher training courses: Every Child Can!, Suzuki Book I, Suzuki Book II, Suzuki Book IV, and Practicum with pedagogue Ronda Cole (April 2015).
